Keke Senior High School, Agege that represented Education District One has emerged the winner of the keenly contested Sixth Edition of the “LAGOS READS INTER – SCHOOLS QUIZ COMPETITION” among selected secondary schools in the sixth education districts across the five divisions of the state.
The Sixth edition of competition held on Tuesday, 28th May, 2024 at the Multi purpose hall of the State Universal Basic Education Board, Maryland in Lagos was organised by Lagos State Library Services in collaboration with Ministry of Tertiary Education.
Keke Senior High School, Agege represented by Oladipo Joshua, Oladunoye Fathiu, Obasanya Sodiq and Obasan Folarin with 26 points came first after they answered questions which covered wide range of subjects in Science, Mathematics, Economics, Use of English, Government and Current Affairs on Lagos State. They went home with a Giant trophy, medals and certificate of participation as the overall winner of the competition.
Keke Senior High School, Agege were closely followed by Festac Senior Grammar School, Amuwo – Odofin’s Quartet of Obiezue Collins, John Williams, Ekundayo Ester and Adamo Toyin from Education District IV came second with a total of 24 points and went home with the second placed trophy, medals and certificates.
With 24 points same as the second placed winner, Khamis Aisha Hafsat, Nuren Akorede, Nwabueze Ndubuzi and Paul Nanga of Mende Senior High School, Maryland that represented Education District Two came third at the end of the competition and received trophy, medals and certificates. A tie break was required between the two schools to decide the second and third placed winners.
The Director, Lagos State Library Services, Mr. Oyadipe Asimiyu Amoo while he welcomed guests, students and other stakeholders to the Year 2004″Lagos Reads Inter – Schools Quiz Competition disclosed that the Lagos State Government in 2018 through the Lagos State Library Board initiated the “LAGOS READS ADVOCACY PROGRAMME” and through its activities inculcate the reading habit into the students at the tender age of their lives and promoting through its enabling facilities a reading programmes and activities in Schools and at its 13 designated Public Library spread across the state.
Mr. Oyadipe Asimiyu stated that the Lagos State Library Board is committed in ensuring that the reading culture among all the students in Lagos State will be improved in consonance with the Third Pillars of Governor Babajide Sanwo – Olu “THEME+ AGENDA” which is “Education and Technology.”
The Library Services Boss called on all the students in Lagos Public Schools and others to constantly make use of the libraries and its facilities closer to them so as to imbibe the culture of reading and independent learning to “achieve” success in life as the Library is considered as”THE PEOPLE’S UNIVERSITY”, which will lead them to a grater heights.
According to him, “A reading culture is an environment where reading is championed, valued, respected and encouraged as reading lies in the heart of curriculum which is utmost importance to the child personal, social and academic success as well as their general well being.
in her goodwill message, the Chairperson of Nigeria Library Association, Dr. Ajayi Taiwo described the initiative as a lofty idea and congratulated the Lagos Library Board Management for organising the Lagos reads and the inter – schools quiz competition, which she said will not only expose the students to more knowledge but will take them to a greater heights.
Director, Agency for Mass Education, Mrs. Oluwakemi Kalesanwo while commending the Management and Staff of the Library Board encouraged the participating students and others to constantly engage in the art of reading which she said will improve their quality of life.
The high point of the Inter – Schools Quiz Competition was the distribution of beautiful school bags and books to all the participating students from all the Sixth Education Districts in the State.
