Spain lifted the Women’s World Cup for the first time ever in the history of the tournament after they stunned Current European Champions, England Lioness by one zero in a thrilling final encounter at Actor Stadium in Sydney.
Captain Olga Carmona scored in the 29th minute of the final match for Spain, while England goalkeeper Mary Earps saved Jennifer Hermosi’s second half penalty. For winning the coveted prize Spain has now joined Germany as the only Country that have won the men’s and women’s World Cup. Spain’s’s men won the title at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
For the record, the Spanish have won in the Under – 17 World Cup, the Under – 20 World Cup and now the World Cup. The individual awards of the tournament went to the following players for their efforts : Japan’s Hinata Miyazawa who emerged the highest goals scorer with five goals was awarded the Golden Boot. As the best goalkeeper of the tournament England goalkeeper Mary Earps received the Golden Glove award.
Spain Aita Bonmasi was awarded the Golden Ball, While Salma Paralluelo of Spain went home with the FIFA Best Young Player award. Since the maiden edition of the tournament in 1991 only six Countries has won the title with United States becoming the most dominant team in the Women’s World Cup history winning it four times more than any other Countries. They won at maiden editions in 1991, 1999, 2015 and 2019. Germany won it twice back to back in 2003 and 2007
